SoakersForum site performance

Hi Fellow Soakers, We've had quite an uptick in visitors lately - so much so that we've occasionally overloaded our server's limits. Some of this load is due to robots and crawlers seeking to index the web, some of it is ... who knows what, and to a lesser extent, it is us, the fellow soakers and so...

Re: Forum Info (Was Message regarding the Search System)

Gotta love our system... the world really needs to be on one "time"... at midnight at GMT, it would be 00:00, and that would be the time around the globe. No timezones, no confusion. But it would feel real odd to be at 00:00 (12 midnight) in Hawaii when it's actually 10AM in the morning! (...

Re: Check your email addresses!

Following up - A couple of these bounces were probably due to Microsoft/Live/Hotmail's sensitivity to spam... that is, if they see too many emails in a short time, they filter it as spam. Now this being a small board, all things considered, there is very little in the way of emails being sent from S...

Check your email addresses!

Folks, I've been getting a few bounces from email service providers lately. Why do I get a bounce? If you have your preferences set to send you an email when someone sends you a PM or posts/replies to a topic, you'll get the email unless there's a problem with your service. Those problems could be: ...

I believe I've fixed the permissions. Give it a try and let me know if there's further issues.

Thanks!

Re: Japan and the Far East

Done. The bulk of postings pertain to Japan anyway; I created "SE Asia/Far East" and moved two topics.

Ok folks, here's a challenge for you - Let's see more information about Japan in that category, and more information about SE Asia & the Far East in that category!

Soak on!

Re: How long will SoakersForum be around?

It costs me just a snidge under $9 a month plus a little of my time. That's a pretty cheap hobby, I'd say... There are many ways I could run advertising - for one, our web hosting service would like me to run banner ads to get you to sign up for hosting plans. I could run this site for FREE!, they s...

How long will SoakersForum be around?

The hosting and domain is now paid through November 2014. Regulars, Simi-Regulars and occasionals, let's see more posting, and Lurkers, join in the conversation! Traffic has been light lately, which means you are out there doing SoakersForum field research. Let's see your trip reports and queries re...

Re: pics showing up big even though resized in photobucket

Yea, I hear you there! I go round and round with some things just like that... can't figure out how to get it to work, then it works but I can't understand why. Dang computers!

Good to hear it's working for now, at least.

Re: Login problem

The indecipherable string of characters is intended to mess up a bot that is trying to register or log in as a user. If a user (or a bot) tries to log in too many times, the user is presented with the panel you just received. I've seen it twice myself. This seems to be a problem across a lot of boar...

Re: Forum Info (Was Message regarding the Search System)

Hmmm... I have an old iPhone that I use for an iPod; I've connected to wireless and surfed the board with it. That's a good question - perhaps Mac/Safari? I can see it being under the Safari category, but not Mac. It should list as iOS.

Re: Forum Info (Was Message regarding the Search System)

Yea, that's what I was noticing. I have my work's W7 machine here, perhaps I should surf the board a few times with it to see if it shows up. Maybe that's the "Unknown" catagory.

Re: Forum Info (Was Message regarding the Search System)

Re: Did you get the message regarding the search system?

I always put the site first, then the term: "site:soakersforum.com mccredie". What started me down this road? I, the site owner and administrator, got an error when I tried to access SoakersForum at work. Just one, but then subsequent views were slow. Initially I figured it was the network...

Forum Info (Was Message regarding the Search System)

Such as this?
"Information
Sorry but you are not permitted to use the search system."

Sorry about that. I implemented a mod to disable the search by guests... and it disabled the search for everyone.

Thanks to C&B for the heads up!

After creating user Mento, I looked at the settings; "Notify me upon replies by default" is turned off. So... who knows.

Re: Test test test - Anyone use Subscriptions?

(Thread diversion - I love it!) Yep, it's cold rain at the moment, but they've been saying the snow will start soon. It may be fun getting to work in the morning.

Mark, I'll play with the sql... per those instructions. Odd tho that I don't recall that setting was on by default.
