This is a really good short article about Japanese Hot Springs, Also check out the Podcast Slideshow called "Eternal Springs" in the article. About 5 minutes long but well worth it!

I love the author's quote here. Who can disagree!!!!
"Personally, I think there’s something in the lizard part of our brain that really likes sitting around in hot water with no clothes on in a beautiful mountain setting."

Interesting article that clearly illustrates the cultural differences between Japan and us. Watch out for the "Alligator Man":

I didn't realize there was a "Hot Springs law" in Japan. If I had ended up a lawyer, this would have been my specialty- have to inspect every one ;-)

As a microboilogist you would need someone who could take samples & run tests on the waters Kim.

Lawyers I I'm quite sure can't do this..

Hey it's a rough job but as they say, somebody has to do it!!!

Depends on if they are courteous, and if they share or not... B^)

I've seen various images of these monkeys - Art Wolfe had a segment on Travels to the Edge a couple weeks ago on this very topic. He stated they were having problems with the monkeys at the resorts so they built soaking areas specifically for the monkeys - no humans allowed in the pools tho people can walk right up to the pool's edge and take pictures.

Fun!

HI all,

Through my website http://soakinginsoutheastasia.blogspot.com/ I have made acquaintance with onsen soaker. She has a long list (in Japanese!) of hot springs she has visited in East Asia (http://www.rakuda-j.net/onsen/asia/index.htm).

Additionally she has just started her own blog (in English) on some of these visits to either onsens in Japan or to hot springs elsewhere in East Asia http://onsensoaker.blogspot.com/.

Hi everybody!

I'll be on vacation in Japan the second time this summer.
I also want to enjoy Japan's hot springs so I decided to visit Tenzan Onsen (http://tenzan.jp/ Japanese only, http://www.hiraganatimes.com/hp/travel/ ... zan-e.html English information).

But I can't figure out if I have to stay there over night to get access to the hot springs or if I just can plan this as a day trip. Can anybody tell me about this?

I'm sorry for my bad English
